DIGITAL CONFERENCE: CROSSING BORDERS, CONTESTING BOUNDARIES

14th Annual MEMSA Conference | 20th - 21st July 2020


The committee of the Durham Medieval and Early Modem Student Association invites applications for our digital conference. We have taken the decision to move our 1-lth annual event online in response to global health concents. Our delegates' papers will lx? delivered as pre-recorded video presentations, facilitating contributions from postgraduate students and early career academics across the world. Crossing Borders, Contesting Boundaries will foster dialogue and debate in an inclusive, interdisciplinary digital environment.

We are delighted to announce our keynote speakers:

• Dr Emma Whip day of Newcastle University will explore how brother-sister relationships on the early modem stage transgressed the boundaries of prescribed sibling behavior.

• Dr Anna Groundwater of National Museums Scotland will consider tire complexity of tire early modem Anglo-Scottish border as it was imagined, performed, mobilized, and crossed.

We welcome abstract submissions from researchers of any discipline engaged in the study of the medieval and early modem periods, which explore the crossing of borders and the contesting of boundaries in the broadest possible sense. Possible presentation themes may include:

• Travel, trade, and pilgrimage

• Intellectual exchange

• Popular participation in politics

• Frontier zones and border regions

• Cartography and exploration

• Texts and paratext

• Rivalry, conflict, and diplomatic relations

• Belonging and exclusion

• Social and domestic networks

• Religious schism and reform

• Gender norms and expectations

• Legal jurisdiction and transgression
